What is your primary financial responsibility to your children?

💰 Saving up for university? 💰 Contributing to a wedding? 💰 Helping them fund a down payment on a property?

These are all nice. And important.

But there is something much more essential:

👉 Teach your children about money 👈

Children who grow into teenagers who understand how to manage money become adults who are financially successful.

Here are some simple ways to get started:

  1. Talk about money in the home. Talk about how much things cost and show children how to price compare when you are shopping online or in the store.

  2. Let your children be part of the decision making process. Should we send the kids to camp this year or go on a vacation? Should we buy fruit from the expensive store or leave the air conditioning on at night?

  3. Make sure children have money to manage. Whether this is from pocket money or from working in the home or out of the home, children can start learning by doing from age 5.

  4. Don't give your children everything they want. Give them space to spend their money on things that matter to them (even if you think it's a waste of money). Let them make mistakes.

  5. Teach the value of investing. You can provide simple interest to children who hold money in a virtual savings account from age 6, help children invest in their favorite companies from age 8-9 and start teaching about index funds, diversification, and risk from age 11-12.

Tag your spouse.

Sit down tonight to decide on the best first step for your children.
