Working on AWS cloud costs in Careem for the past few years, we put a couple of 3rd party tools for cloud cost analysis to use. I strongly advise organizations to implement Cloud Intelligence Dashboards, specifically CUDOS. These dashboards are a must-have tool for a deep and insightful understanding of your AWS spending. The dashboards might look sophisticated initially, but the sophistication is well justified given the underlying cost structures and different pricing dimensions of AWS services.

To contrast this with other tools, key features of these dashboards' success:

  1. Concrete data without leaky abstractions. These concrete details will have a steep learning curve for sure, but it is an effort well invested that will pay in multiples; the deeper understanding will allow faster cost anomaly triaging, favorable cost-benefit ratio for optimizations, and many other success stories that I may detail in later posts.
  2. Extensibility. Being built on top of AWS Quicksight allowed Careem to enrich the dashboards with organization-specific details; this empowered teams to own their cloud consumption fully and, consequently, the optimization activities as “Owners Not Employees” should do, which is one of our core Careem values.
