🤖 Googlebot and other spiders crawl the interwebs, render pages, index sites, and rank them for search terms. But what does that actually mean?

🕸️ Crawling is following breadcrumbs from one site to another via links. Help Googlebot help you by providing an up to date site map. Don’t want the bots to index certain pages? Provide a robots.txt file and list the pages to exclude or the bots that shouldn’t index. Don’t be surprised if all bots don’t adhere to that, though.

🎨 Rendering takes the code that makes the pages viewable, along with the helper files such as CSS, and uses that code to build the page. A browser renders the code to serve a webpage. Google also uses rendering to test page elements and technical aspects of the site. Keep your code, images, and ancillary files lean. Ensure your site is mobile responsive. Fix technical errors.

🗂️ Once the bot has crawled the site, it indexes the information found on the rendered pages. The search engine can then use that indexed information for future searches. Update your content frequently and resubmit your site map for reindexing.

🖥️ The Search Engine Results Page (SERP) lists the indexed pages that match a user’s search query based on the expertise, experience, authority, and trustworthiness (EEAT) of the content and ranking signals. Provide helpful information to your visitors. Link out your authoritative and trustworthy sources.

✅ There’s a lot more to having a well running website and solid SEO, but this is a good place to start.
