Highlights
From 2012-2015, I facilitated weekly support groups for moms (and occasionally other family members) of babies starting their life out with a stay in the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Denver's University Hospital-Anschutz campus. Love for Lily's facilitated support provides critical emotional presencing/navigation resources and in-unit coaching as families experience having a baby or babies in the NICU. Love for Lily has since expanded to 6 hospitals (with a 7th starting in June), and also includes bereavement support, post-NICU support, and they have participants from 23 states participating in their virtual programs.
Every year, Kolbe Corp partners with me and other Kolbe Certified Consultants worldwide during #KolbeStrengthsWeek to help people understand their instinctive strengths.
It was my joy and pleasure to provide Founder/Executive Director Sahra Cahoon and her amazing core team with 1:1 sessions as well as a team session during this year's #KolbeStrengthsWeek!
Do you have a vocation, or do you have a job?
I often ask people what they do for a living. Sometimes I change it up by asking about how they spend their time, or I might ask about what type of activities hold their interest. These conversations — especially the ones about work and careers — are not small talk for me. I'm genuinely interested.
My next question is often this: Do you enjoy your work/activities/how you spend your time?
I find that when someone aligns their energy with work and activities that enliven and engage them, our conversation comes fully to life, and is often steeped in gratitude and appreciation! We smile a lot. We may even laugh. We appreciate the connection we've just created.
When someone is not aligned with how they spend their time, the conversation is often about their job, or possibly their career (a job done over time, often years). This is not the same as a vocation. How do I know? The energy is different, their tone of voice and mannerisms are different. Sometimes they appear bored, or tired, or annoyed, and occasionally sad about their experience, and may even want to change the subject. I notice my curiosity goes up, and I wonder about how they might connect back to what they'd rather be doing —and with their willingness and permission, to help them resource themselves towards moving in the direction of what they most want.
How about you? If you're clear about your vocation, I'd love to hear about it! DM me or get the conversation going in the comments below!
And if you're not, and you're curious about what that might be for you, I'd love to hear about that, too. It's truly one of my favorite conversations.
