NEW: Allison Schiff's latest piece in AdExchanger is VICIOUS. I can feel that urge to throw a stapler at the adtech industry.
The grift: subdomain fraud. A company called Sincera has found evidence that two companies, Perion Network and Viewbix have been quietly launching dozens (hundreds?) of secret subdomains on relatively reputable domains:
SPIN — "recommended.spin.com" The Jerusalem Post — "magazine.jpost.com"
...and running truckloads of ads on these junky subdomains while reporting to advertisers that they ran on the original domain.
These subdomains run totally different content than the domain. They don't reach the audiences that advertisers are paying for. In fact, they don't reach people at all. These secret subdomains are designed to serve ads to no one. They are Made for Advertising websites.
When Adalytics reported that Forbes was engaging in subdomain fraud last month, they said it was "a bug."
But thanks to Sincera's reporting, we can abandon that delusion now and behold the awesome phenomenon taking place right in front of us: this industry has gone so far up its own ass that our vendors have abandoned the very premise of "serving ads to people."
That takes too much time and effort. Why not let just take them your money instead?
