On this International Holocaust Remembrance Day, I remember the 11 million victims of the Holocaust, including 6 million Jews. I also remember my grandmother, Holocaust survivor Irene Klein Berner. This picture was taken in the Poking Pine Displaced Persons camp on her wedding day in September 1946.
Grandma survived the Budapest Ghetto but was orphaned when her parents and siblings were murdered in Auschwitz. She arrived at the DP camp 3 months earlier, where she met my grandfather Sol. Grandpa had survived several camps including Mauthausen, and his first wife and 2 young children were murdered in Auschwitz.
The story my aunt tells is that Grandpa was a camp matchmaker, but my just-turned 18 year old Grandma had her eyes only on him, despite Grandpa being literally twice her age. Irene and Sol married and had 2 children while still living in refugee camps. They emigrated to the US in 1950 and were married for almost 60 years.
I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Managing Director at Stout! Vantage Point Advisors was acquired by Stout, and I am thrilled to be part of Stout's Business Valuations team.
