Ransomware and Third Party Impact. Yikes!
When there is a significant third-party ransomware attack, like recent ones in the healthcare industry, there are major disruptions across an entire sector that greatly impact all involved, including customers and partners.
This also forces us risk professionals to go back to the drawing board, so to speak, to see what we can do to better identify and prepare (underscoring prepare because we know it is not a matter of if but when) for third-party operational disruptions of such magnitude.
Ideally, such potentially impactful third parties are categorized as critical, and undergo appropriate due diligence, both internally and externally. Internally, organizations have documented preparatory steps, which are periodically tested, that shelter the organization from the contamination blast (ex: ransomware lateral movement) and provide operational resiliency (ex: insource certain activities, a list of alternative third parties, etc.). Externally, evaluating the third-party’s control environment for cybersecurity and operational resiliency.
Unfortunately, ransomware continues to be a considerable threat. In 2023, the FBI has seen ransomware grow by 18% with the healthcare sector having the most.

Having the opportunity to work with FIs that are required to comply with NYS DFS 500 cybersecurity regulation, the amended and published November 2023 changes, which is a significant rewrite that further bolsters existing controls and introduces new controls, can be a considerable uplift. This is why it is important to conduct a gap analysis to document the deltas and determine current investments/capabilities already in place that can be extended to address requirements, and new investments that may be required.
Although there is a control implementation timeline to comply with the latest DFS amendment, starting December 2023 through November 2025, having conducted a gap analysis and established a plan to continue to align with the regulation is essential.
Lastly, there is a new Covered Entity classification called Class A Companies that come with additional cybersecurity requirements to implement, including independent audit review, EDR, SIEM, and PAM.
