𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝?

Over the past couple of weeks leadership has been in the spotlight for many and that’s been especially true for me this week.

𝗠𝗢𝗡, I kicked off an initiative that seeds the possibility of a much larger ambition to develop a NJ American Latine Cultural Center meant to teach and preserve American Latine Culture. A labor of love for the NJ Latine community and a reaffirmation that you must do it, not just dream it.

𝗧𝗨𝗘, I watched what was the most hyped roll call in convention history and heard from some of the greatest orators of our time. Reminding Americans of who we are, challenging us to meet our neighbors and colleagues where they are, and to not squander the sacrifices of our elders.

𝗪𝗘𝗗, I spent the day with a group of leaders defining tomorrow’s technology, grappling with management and people tensions, questioning the future and challenging themselves to lead differently.

𝗧𝗛𝗨 was met mid-flight from SFO > EWR reflecting on the grandness of our dreams, the loneliness in which we fight our battles, and the fleeting moments we have together.

. . . in that moment, in the solitude of my noise canceling airpods and the scene of a packed red-eye flight, disembarking as the sun rose, I was reminded of a line in Amanda Gorman’s poem . . . “perhaps the American dream is no dream at all, but instead a dare to dream together.”

Here in this photo I stand next to Congressman Bill Pascrell who was nearly three times my senior, who I had the privilege of interning for in Washington DC when I was 19, and who I learned today wrote a letter of support for my mother’s immigration proceedings. We didn’t have the same story, but we both loved NJ, believed in an ascendance far beyond our beginnings would tell, and knew you had to lead through, across, and forward.

Let’s live the American Dream, not as a dream but as a dare to build the improbably together.
