Highlights
Here’s a formula I learned and practice often to overcome fear.
- Understand that fear and courage both produce discomfort.
Fear is an avoidance of moving beyond comfort zone.
Courage is feeling the discomfort and moving anyways.
Fear and avoidance prolong the discomfort.
Courageous momentum and moving beyond comfort zone will actually lessen the discomfort as the unfamiliar becomes familiar.
But courage can’t/won’t/doesn’t eliminate fear.
Fear is a feeling.
- Feel the fear.
It’s energy. It has a charge to it.
I learned the best way to free myself of fear and let it go (overcome it) is to allow it to be.
Feel it. Acknowledge it. Be curious about it. Observe it. (I find for me this is easier when I close my eyes and eliminate distractions)
Feelings like fear are temporary if they are not resisted/avoided/ignored.
It’s the denial of or avoidance of that makes it feel more in control or permanent.
Feel it and the energy will move.
(You’ll know it’s moved because it won’t feel as strong or the feeling completely goes away.)
- Notice discomfort is still there, but it will feel different.
It’s not longer charged by the feeling of fear.
Courage is taking action even while feeling and experiencing discomfort.
It’s in the forward momentum that discomfort subsides.
Now, action is courage motivated vs. hindered by fear or fear motivated.
