I’ve attended a bunch of sustainability events in January but since it’s a Friday here’s a fun one I went to, Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres World Tour in Singapore!

Beyond catchy and uplifting melodies, Coldplay has also attained commercial success selling over 100M records worldwide, winning 7 Grammy Awards and headlined at big music festivals worldwide. Going beyond economic impact, Coldplay is now pioneering sustainability through live performances by releasing their own sustainability report that aligns with UN Climate Change frameworks. Amongst other things, I was most impressed by how they utilised various sustainable energy sources to power the concert.

Key highlights include:

  • Durable kinetic dance floors developed by Energy Floors that harnesess audience dancing to create electricity for the concert
  • World’s first tourable battery system created by BMW Group with more than 40 recycled BMW i3 batteries which can store energy and power 100% of the show
  • Installation of solar photovoltaic panels before each show to charge the batteries and renewable grid power for the tour

These alongside other green initiatives have produced 47% less CO2 emissions than their last tour in 2016-2017. There’s still a lot of room for improvements but a great start to incorporating green practices into live entertainment especially since Singapore is welcoming more global artistes to tour here.

Knowing our presence at the concert consciously powers sustainable business opportunities and positive impact to the planet, me and 55K other fans experienced the most incredible music to our ears that night! 🥳

4 months ago some of these professionals were worried about the opportunity costs of taking on an intensive career transition course. They weighed their options and decided to join us at our SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) in The Future of Smart Building & Smart City. And all those online night classes, in-person Saturday lectures, career coaching, project preparation has culminated to this day where they present their learnings. As I listened to them present their Capstone Project, I am in awe at the depth of knowledge they have gained about how to evaluate current building emissions, innovatively green the built environment and tabulate savings of these smart technology implementation. What started out as a seedling of curiosity has developed into a full fledged passion for making effective and sustainable impact through their role and (and future work!)

Thankful for a team of our dedicated practitioners and experts that made this happen: Eric Loh Syed Mubarak Prof Robert Tiong justus teo Kameshwari J.
