Founder & Executive Director at Movement BE
Nate Howard is the Founder and Executive Director of Movement BE, a non-profit organization that empowers young people to discover their stories.1 He is also a professional speaker, poet, educator, and social entrepreneur.1
Howard founded Movement BE in May 2013 after an incident at the University of Southern California (USC) where 79 LAPD officers shut down his event, leading to him being on the front page of the LA Times for sparking a movement against racial profiling.1 This experience made him realize that others might attempt to tell his story, so he created Movement BE with the motto: “tell your story before they do”.1 Since its creation, the organization has impacted thousands of students across the country and the world.1
Howard was selected for the inaugural NBCBLK28 list as one of the top 28 black leaders in the nation under 28 years old and was later featured on the Today Show as one of the "Best and Brightest: Game Changers Making History".1 His belief is that activism should focus on education, empowering youth to create change.1 He sees poetry as a means of self-expression and challenges school systems to recognize its importance in youth development, encouraging them to find their voices and challenge the status quo.1
In his role at Movement BE, Howard has revolutionized education using VR and AI software, changing how major school districts across the United States approach learning.2 He also created BE the Music, a show for Trojan Vision, where he interviewed performers about their inspirations.4 After the police incident, he shifted the show's focus to helping young people who felt vulnerable and stereotyped.4 He developed an after-school program called “BE the Voice” at his old high school, creating a safe space for students who felt overlooked.4
Howard is also a writer with Movement BE Publishing and a professional speaker with Nate Howard Speaks.3 He was the Speech & Debate Coach for La Jolla High School from September 2014 to May 2016 and was the Senior Producer & Host for Platforum Music w/ Nate Howard from September 2011 to May 2012.3 Howard graduated from the University of Southern California in 2013 with a BA in Communication.3 His biggest inspirations are Martin Luther King Jr. and Maya Angelou.1
