How do you support your team through tasks or events that might be considered tedious or overwhelming?

I’m thankful that my teams are incredibly positive and take on every challenge with the best attitudes.

However, if I’m brutally honest, there are just those times and tasks that even I look at and groan and I know my team is doing the same.

And just telling everyone to get a stiff upper lip and barrel through it will not cut it.

For me, it’s about showing empathy with honesty about how I see the task and then adding on a healthy dose of encouragement!

Even if there’s not a current plan to get through to the other side, being honest about it, empathizing with how everyone is feeling, and then encouraging everyone to come to the table with solutions will get you through some of the biggest challenges.

But if we let ourselves devolve into complaining and bickering even the most simple challenges become Mt. Everest.

So let’s stay positive out there and keep bring the magic for our teams and our clients!

Processes are there for a reason! (long story time addition!)

Remember back 15-20 years ago when we millennials were entering the workforce, and all of the HR talks were about how our generation was typified by our questioning every process imaginable with a "yeah, but why?"

Yep, that was me for sure!

I would ask "why" every time something I was being asked to do didn't make sense to me. I'm sure it got annoying to those who had to train me. :)

Eventually, by asking why, I learned that processes are designed for many different reasons. Sometimes, for efficiency, others for repeatability, and sometimes for safety. I learned to trust the process but also to look for ways to improve it.

Well, today that was reinforced big time!

This morning, I was running a little behind in getting to the airport. The rental car return is a couple of train stops away from the terminal, so I needed to hurry up. I parked, hopped out of the car, grabbed my bags, and took off toward the ticket counter to check my bags. Once I handed the kind lady my bags, I realized I had left my phone in the rental car! 😨

Now here was the first missed process. I ALWAYS do the pat down when I leave a rental. Phone, Wallet, Keys you know? But today I didn't actually focus on it. I did the pat down as a habit but wasn't actually paying attention, otherwise I would have realized my phone wasn't in my pocket.

I rushed back to the car return but they had already taken the car down to be cleaned for the next person. And here is where someone else not following their processes got me!

The customer service person (Thanks Katie!) quickly pulled up my reservation and called down to have the team find the car. It was found but, alas, no phone! No big deal, the folks that clean out the cars have a process for lost and found item. Katie offered to run down and check the box where they put things that are then collected at the end of the day and sorted for return. But it wasn't in the box!

They called and had the car checked again, no phone. :( The CS team were calling my phone (62 times in fact!) to no avail! Finally, I realized I could run up to the rental counter, snag some wifi to use find my phone on my laptop to at least get an idea of where it might be!

Found it! It was over at one of their wash stations in a building on the other side of the airport! Someone had found it and tossed it on a table instead of getting it back to the lost and found box. 7.5 minutes later, a tech ran over with my phone in his hands!

But remember how I was in a rush to get to the airport? Yep, that's right, I missed my flight. *facepalm

All because me and some fella washing cars didn't follow the normal, simple processes that had been established.

If you made it this far, thanks for reading my story! Why not comment down below on what simple processes you follow to save you from headaches like this one?
