This one was personal for us. We grew up in Idaho, and my mom taught here for 23 years. It’s a beautiful state, but sometimes it can be a little hard to love.

Idaho consistently ranks last in the nation in spending per student. Budget cuts put a squeeze on teacher pay, classroom material budgets, and facilities funding. Rural communities are hit the hardest and currently face a crisis: the lack of money is leading to massive layoffs and widespread school closures. This isn’t an issue of getting a GOOD education - it’s a matter of even having one at all.

When given the opportunity to tell a story about the future of education, we knew we had to explore what was going on with Valley View Elementary in the small northern town of Bonners Ferry. The school was built in 1949 with recycled materials from a decommissioned World War II base. It has cracks in the walls, a leaky ceiling, and rusted plumbing - a hazardous combination that has faculty and school district leaders worried something disastrous could happen at any moment.

The school board has worked tirelessly to raise funds for a new school, but Idaho’s unique 66% supermajority law makes it nearly impossible to pass a bond in a rural, low-income community. The board will be running another bond this November and will use our film to appeal to members of Boundary County.

Despite this continuous uphill battle, the staff at Valley View shows up every day to create an engaging learning environment for kids. Because in their eyes, kids are worth it no matter what. We hope Idaho can recognize that soon.
