Are you assessing the most important quality for a great junior developer in your interviews?

I wanted to share a throwback to one of the first of our CoderList talks with Alastair Cashen of WM Reply. In the podcast Alastair breaks down what he sees as the most important factor for a junior developer candidate, and how they look for it in interviews.

Want to know what it is?

Alastair thinks self-teaching is a strong indicator that someone is passionate and committed to becoming a developer, and likely to be a star in their team. This passion often encourages candidates to dive into projects within the business and really push to make themselves, and their work, better.

Is this something you test for in your interviews? If so how?

You can hear Alaister’s thoughts here - https://lnkd.in/dHsZy54

“I don’t need friends, I need code that works.”

This is something I said to my previous boss when I was absolutely obsessed with learning to code - he was trying to get me to work less.

I was utterly determined to become a fantastic junior developer.

As much as I’d never encourage someone to be as obsessed as I was, it is an attitude we see all the time with self-taught developers.

There are candidates who maintain this level of obsession whilst also carrying the weight of young families, full-time jobs and real responsibilities - these are the candidates you should be looking for.

If you can find candidates that are truly obsessed with wanting to do the job you’re about to give them, you’re going to have great employees you won’t need to push.

Instead sometimes you might need to hold them back.
