Every year at Podium we give out a very special award. It has become, at least in my opinion, the most coveted recognition for any member of the sales team. This award is the Thayne Arbon Memorial Award.

Thayne was one of the best sales reps I have ever worked with. He tragically passed away while working here at Podium in 2019. He represented, not just some of our most important and core values here at Podium, but also was an incredibly dedicated husband, son, brother, marine, and friend. As a professional, he was humble, relentless in his pursuit of learning and improving, INCREDIBLY hard-working, a ton of fun to be around, and successful, along with so many other qualities that he made look so easy day in and day out. So, as you can imagine, we take considerable thought when recognizing someone to receive this award and honor.

I, among other peers and leaders, was so VERY proud to bestow this award on Katie Hill this year. Today is her 4-year anniversary at Podium and I wanted to take a minute to thank her for four amazing years of leadership and excellence. She is a joy to work with and makes everyone around her better. She demands excellence while creating a culture of growth/learning and fun. She has mentored and developed some of the best reps at Podium and represents EVERYTHING the Thayne Arbon Memorial Award stands for!

Thank you Katie for all you have done for Podium, your team, your peers and me during your four years. Hope we are lucky enough to keep it going another four years or longer!

I shared this with our sales team at Podium and thought it could be helpful for the larger sales community.

This past week I met with a top rep who asked about how to deal with the anxiety of a “sales slump”. I have gone through quite a few slumps in my career, they happen to everyone, here are the actions I would take to get back to success:

  1. Make more dials!- You had to guess this one was going to be first! Pipeline (good pipeline) cures all sales problems and sometimes you just need more deals to hit the same number. It's ok, it happens. Also, I always felt that making calls put me back in a control mindset. At least I could go home every day with sweat on my brow knowing I gave it my very best. At some point, the numbers will turn in your favor if you make enough dials and have enough at-bats.

  2. DONT CHANGE YOUR DEMO! - As salespeople we can start to overthink... A LOT. Do you really think that the demo that hit quota last month/quarter all of a sudden has stopped working this month? NO! You are overthinking it, overcomplicating it to try and compensate. Stay consistent with the demo and process.

  3. Change one thing about your physical environment- When you are in a slump you physically start to slump. You get lazy, sink in your chair, stop focusing on the small things, etc. Why? Because you want validation. You want to be right, that you are not great at sales or the product stinks or the customer is stupid…whatever. So, change one thing about your environment to change your mindset. For me, I would start to physically stand up and be animated with my hands, even on a call, (pre zoom video, yes I am old!) I found this would put me in a position of strength, energy, and confidence. It's almost 100% a confidence issue, changing one thing about your physical environment can help bring the confidence and energy back.

  4. When success comes, keep going! - You will break out of the slump, when you do, ride the wave. Sales is a confidence game so when you are feeling confident, keep it going. Sadly, many of us have success and then slow down, the opposite should be true, get momentum and keep the momentum building.

  5. Care but don't care too much (thanks Mark Evans)- Customers will feel you pressing. Don't press! This is for them, not for you. Have confidence your offering will make their lives and company/team better. Be customer focused, nail the small things, but do not make it about you. Care but don't care too much.

  6. Have fun- We are salespeople, enjoy it! Most of us aren't sending people to space or curing cancer so let's not take it all so seriously. This should be fun and our customers should have fun. Enjoy learning about your customer and inviting them to make their lives better with your solution.

Slumps happen, in every business and every product. it's not a big deal so don't make it one. The items above always helped me. If you are in a slump, start at the top of the list and turn that slump into a streak!
