Nathaniel Vaughn Kelso is an award-winning map geek and cartographer based in San Francisco with a rich history in the field of cartography and GIS technology.

Kelso led engineering teams for map development at Snapchat, worked at Mapzen, launched Transit for Apple Maps, designed vector maps for China, and managed production and design technology at Stamen Design.

Having expertise in technical GIS, analytical, information management, interaction design, and cartographic skills, Kelso strives to deliver timely, accurate solutions meeting client requirements.

Before his tenure at Stamen Design, Kelso created interactive graphics, maps, and data visualizations for the Washington Post and learned classical print cartography at National Geographic.

Kelso is renowned as the co-creator of Natural Earth, a free GIS world base map, and actively shares his insights through his blog, social media, and open-source contributions on GitHub.

As a former President of NACIS, Kelso has presented at various conferences worldwide on topics related to cartography, GIS technology, and spatial data analysis.

His specialties include map design, cartography, web, mobile, print, and database mapping, geospatial technologies, geocoding, programming, and workflow management.

Kelso holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and a Certificate of Study in GIS and Remote Sensing from Cal Poly Humboldt.
