The AFR publishing standards are a disgrace! They publish false information and then they change it afterwards (easy to do in the digital version) without apologizing about it. Also, what does a financial review newspaper has to do with reporting false news from the other side of the world? This is the letter (with small changes) I sent to their editorial email.
Dear Editor,
This letter is to complain about the lack of professionalism in your editorial standard and reporting. On the weekend you published a story that Israel has killed 100 Palestinians in a school attack. This was published very soon after the attack without any verification on your part or AP. The story quoted the ministry of health in Gaza which is a Hamas controlled authority.
Hamas is a recognized terror group by the Australian government. Since when journalists trust a recognized terror group reporting about anything, let alone attacks against it? Also, a proper journalist should know that no one can count and confirm 100 dead within minutes or even hours of an attack?!?
You have since amended the story to say only 60 people have died (without formally apologizing for the false publication). Furthermore, it has since been discovered that more than 30 were terrorists who stayed in the school and even the number 60 is not yet confirmed and actually denied by the IDF. Have you no shame? are you trying to incite more hate and animosity?
This is a gross negligence on your part and it requires a formal apology and some work to make sure this does not repeat itself in the future.
This letter will also be published on Linkedin to my 8K+ contacts in Australia. Many of which are subscribers including myself (under one of my businesses).
Btw, why would a financial publication be in such a rush to publish non financial news from the other side of the world when you know you don't have the capability or resources to verify it?
I look forward to your reply.
