Highlights
Reminder - you can (and should) set bid floors and caps! Here's why:
Smart bidding can do a lot of good, but if budgets are too low, there aren't enough conversions, or your CPA/ROAS goal isn't realistic, Google will throttle your bids and cause you to under serve.
While PMax doesn't let you use portfolio bidding strategies (unless you're using SA360), stand alone search campaigns do. So long as you apply a TCPA or TROAS goal to the "Max Conversions" or "Max Conversion Value" bidding strategy you can set a minimum and maximum bid.
Minimum bids ensure that Google doesn't force cheap bids that correlate with lower quality and lower impression share due to ad rank. Maximum bids ensure you don't sink too much of your budget into a single click.
Set a portfolio bidding strategy per campaign to ensure you can have maintain a budget per campaign (unless you have a business reason for sharing a budget across campaigns).
Google is keeping third party cookies!!!
...I have thoughts...
-
Can we get our data back please? There are a lot of brands that made big concessions to tracking to make sure we'd be prepared for the cookipocolyse. I'd like to see some enhancements to consent mode and enhanced conversions off of this news.
-
A lot of brands are going to need to find new thought leadership talking points 😅. Since 2018 the "death of the cookie" has been floating in the air. It will be interesting to see which "crisis" takes its place.
-
Remarketing (or retargeting if you prefer), is back on the menu! That said, consent is still important - don't forget to include third party tracking in your consent requests. Really interested if this a means to squash Meta's rising market share.
-
I would not be surprised at all if PMax and Demand Gen get audience signal enhancements off of this news. Watch for this on Microsoft as well.
-
Amazon is STILL interesting! With consent driven third party cookies here to stay, the possibilities are boundless on audience integration.
Great write up by Garett Sloane on AdAge!

p.s. Optmyzr customers, invest some time in building out segment scorer off of this news! Great data to feed back into the system.
