On this day, December 12th, I want to share a thought about heroes. I am fortunate to have known my hero, to have been surrounded by his strength, his guidance, and his support. He taught me to always look forward, to focus on my path while finding humor along the way.
He was born in 1933 in Mashad, Iran, and was the youngest of 3 boys. He would recount being 10 years old during WWII when Soviet soldiers occupied listening posts in his town at the northern border of Iran. He saw his mother become religious, Islam providing her a path to survive the trials that faced her life and time. He watched his oldest brother leave to America, on his own strength, to find a new life as a young physician. He watched the struggle between nationalism and communism in his own country in the years following the war. And many years later he watched his other brother succumb to the pain of mental health.
However, he found his own strength and took to his path, saying goodbye to his mother one cold winter evening who was left only with her faith in Islam as her companion. Incredible strength, courage, the likes of which is hard to fathom.
He found a new life in Ohio and married a young American nurse, had a family and a solo orthopedics practice spanning 4 decades. He taught by example, not words, and was a practical man. “No matter what you have Neil, there is always someone else who has more. A nicer car, more money, a bigger house. Don’t waste your time pursuing just things”
This man was a great man, he went from skillfully replacing a hip or knee for a patient in pain, to Parkinson’s disease that left him struggling to button his own shirt. He raised two boys and had 4 grandchildren that he spent the last few years of his life close to in California.
This great man was my father, and on this day one year ago we lost him. I share this for all of those who have lost their heroes but who were made stronger by them. I thank you Dad for the things you gave us, but so much more for what you taught us and the countless lives you helped and touched. Particularly mine.
