Think you need more leads? When was the last time you took a serious look at your churn rate?
If you’re an agency owner with a retainer business model, your churn rate is one of the most important metrics you can track.
Firstly, let’s define churn:
Churn = (Lost Customers ÷ Total Customers at the Start of Time Period) x 100
Let’s put some numbers on this:
Say you have 25 customers. You bring on 6 new customers but lose 5 existing customers in month 1. Your monthly churn rate is 20%.
You added 6 new customers, a net gain of 1. Sales is working well, but really, 20% churn is NOT good.
Let’s now put a $ value on it:
Your 25 customers pay a monthly fee of $5k. So in month 1 your revenue is $125k. And in that first month you added 1 net new customer and grew your revenue by $5k.
But you’re not adding $5k every month. Why? Because with a 20% churn, by month 12 you’re churning nearly as many customers as you’re brining on and you’ve got just 29 customers total. And you’re now booking $147k MRR, an 18% increase from the start of the year.
BUT your goal is to hit $200k MRR in 12 months. You need to get ahead of the problem and take action, now.
Addressing your churn rate will pay back, big time.
Let’s consider the effect of halving monthly churn from 20% to 10%.
You have the same 25 customers paying a monthly fee of $5k at the start of the year. Sales continue to bring on 6 new customers but you’ve gone from losing 5 customers in month 1 to losing only 2-3 (2.5 to be exact).
Project forward the full 12 months and with a 20% churn you’ve got a net gain of 4 customers. BUT with a 10% churn you have a net gain of 22 customers to 47 in total by month 12 ... and that gives you a 90% increase in revenue to $268k MRR. Smashing your 12 month goal to hit $200k.
❌ So at a 20% churn you’ll go from $125k MRR to $147k MRR in 12 months. 🔥 At a 10% churn you’ll go from $125k MRR to $268k MRR in 12 months.
A net improvement of $121k MRR and over $600k for the year. All from taking action to improve your churn rate.
Sales wasn’t your problem. Your ability to hold on to customers once you had them was. : : Want to learn how metrics can help you build more effective systems that enable your agency to scale? Send me a DM and we can find a time to discuss.
