Do you bring your real self to work?

That's the question that I have been asking people around me - and i often get mixed responses. Some felt that it is important to be authentic and consistent, while others felt that there is a need to put on different personas for different context. Those who falls into the second category often associate work with being professional, and leisure with being casual. Hence the big question....

Is it okay to bring my casual self to work?

My answer is a big Yes!

I have been encouraging my team to do exactly that as that strengthens the trust within us as we take on work challenges. By being our casual self also means that we are more likely to give each other candid feedback and that helps us improve as a team. Here is a recent team dinner (one of many) where we talk about everything except work. Such occasions remind us to be authentic.

It's no secret that authenticity is important in the workplace. Authenticity is about being true to yourself, and being honest with others. It's about building trust, and creating an environment where people feel comfortable being themselves. When people feel like they can be themselves at work, they're more likely to be engaged and productive. They're also more likely to stay with the company for the long haul.

So if you want to build a high-performing team, make sure you create an environment where people can be authentic!

Let me know what you think in the comments below.
