Embrace a "crab-like career": sideways moves to jobs that don’t necessarily involve a promotion or pay rise

According to The Economist, a study found that employees who experienced lateral moves were more likely to be promoted and enjoy higher wage growth later in their careers than employees who did not.

"You can move up by first moving sideways."

I have made several lateral moves in my career, moving from publishing to banking in my early years. When I first entered the tech industry, I went from being a team lead to being an IC. In one of my intra-company transfers, I even took a pay cut when I moved from Sales to Marketing.

The pay cut, however, was temporary. The broad knowledge base, skillsets & networks that came with these horizontal moves helped advance my career later on.

So, don't dismiss an opportunity just because it doesn't offer immediate upward progression. It can (and often will) pay off later.

My curated list of books by women / on women / for women.

1️⃣ My Life In Full, by former PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi

This memoir covers Nooyi's early years in India and how she broke the highest glass ceiling in corporate America, leading Pepsi on a "Performance with Purpose" mission. This may not be a popular opinion, but Nooyi does not think that women can “have it all". Society often expects women to work like they do not have children, and raise children like they do not work. It's thus refreshing to see one of the most powerful women acknowledge the struggles of maintaining work-life balance.

2️⃣ Flowers of Fire, by Hawon Jung

The book begins with the story of Prosecutor Seo Ji-Hyun, the woman who started South Korea's #MeToo movement. Seo represents a new generation of feminists challenging misogyny in their respective fields -- from law to publishing to government. I corroborated these accounts with colleagues in Korea: heartened to learn that, whilst true, they also reflect significant strides in the ongoing fight for gender equality. These women showed us that no matter how entrenched the patriarchy might seem, change is possible.

3️⃣ What would Boudica do? By Foley & Coates

Featuring 50 women from different countries & centuries (Cleopatra, Ada Lovelace, Amelia Earhart, Empress Cixi etc.), this compilation translates historical stories into lessons we can apply to modern life: overcoming imposter syndrome, standing up for yourself, finding mentors & more. Whether or not you find inspiration in these stories, you will be entertained by the puns & snarky humour.

4️⃣ This child will be great, by Africa's first elected female president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

Dubbed Africa's "Iron Lady", Sirleaf was sworn in as president of Liberia during a period of brutal civil conflict. Leaving behind a comfortable banking career in the US (World Bank) and Kenya (Citibank), she returned to Liberia's war-torn villages, determined to make a difference. She stood up against oppressive dictators & challenged her Western sponsors. "If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough" -- Sirleaf truly lived these words. As you follow her story through divorce, exile, imprisonment & eventual ascent to the highest level of leadership, you can't help but believe that maybe... you too can change the world.

5️⃣ Letter to my daughter, by Maya Angelou

Dedicated to the daughter she never had, these essays offer insights into living life with meaning. I recommend reading anything by Maya Angelou, but this book is a good one to start with. Each chapter delves into essential themes such as overcoming racism, navigating single motherhood, and exploring her relationship with God. Written in a beautiful, poetic style, Angelou's words soothe us whilst gently reminding us of the resilience of the human spirit.
