Ample wisdom from Adam Perlis about hiring designers for AI in this article, if a wee bit aspirational with "generally you can expect [an interview process] that looks like this." His screen template reflects a rare ~3% of my experiences.

What I liked seeing the most is the emphasis on how there is "not just one type of AI designer." The industry has collapsed the distinction of a service designer and an icon designer into the same recruiting keyword. This is a good start toward a needed recruiting framework.

Potential gaps, after a first read:

  • Many things that feel like real progress in the space are being developed for curious sport. The solo artist hacking around in wee hours, and publishing to Twitter? The profile of such explorers feels distinct from the three proposed types.
  • The evaluation criteria needs Creativity. The real ones are weirdos, and not strictly methodical in their approach to problem-solving. Please hire more oblique thinkers (please).
  • Speeding through failures is a tired tech trope, but I'm surprised the dynamic pace of AI progress is discussed as vaguely as "real-time environments" here, where iteration speed does loom large.
  • There is no discussion of social media & PR. The praxis is: we are in a hype cycle, and AI folk are selected to visibly confer AI-ness to a company.
  • A less-cynical factor about social presence: collaboration and competition are weirdly peaking at the same time in the AI space. There's a open-source, hacker-led vibe & a scarce set of experienced hands. In both respects, that adds up to a quiet criteria for extroversion.

Didn't read the example exercises, yet. But this felt better than a lot of other pieces I've stumbled upon, and earned Adam a follower on here.
