An absolute gem of a paper published by Dr. Jeffrey Flier titled: "Drug Development Failure: how GLP-1 development was abandoned in 1990" (Persp Biol Med, 2024). Full of 'lessons learned', conclusions, caveats, descriptions of potential traps and mirages, and the burden of lost opportunities for both science and suffering patients (not to mention investment value potential...). The various specifics notwithstanding, the story serves - across therapeutic areas and indications - as a cautionary tale of the risk of hedging bets by the key decision-makers when a candidate drug's MOA is truly disruptive - whilst supported by promising - even if early - clinical and preclinical data. It has been many years since I completed my residency in Internal Medicine at University of Utah School of Medicine. This month, 125 new students are expected to enroll at the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine as the Class of 2028! To celebrate their arrival, UUSM continues its beloved tradition of gifting each student a Littmann IV Cardiology stethoscope, engraved with the "UofU" logo, at the White Coat Ceremony - scheduled for August 9th.

I am proud as a residency alumnus to be a part of this meaningful tradition by making a donation today to sponsor one stethoscope for one student of the 2028 Class!
