Happy New Year 2022!
As we march into the new year, I penned down some personal reflections and learnings in 2021. This was a highly unusual year that took us across 3 continents, during which we were preparing for the arrival of a new family member, just to be turned back at airports on the way home, all the while managing teams remotely full time.

In a Covid world, country travel policies are ever evolving with short notice. Living in a country with a volatile travel policy that may be motivated by reasons beyond public health, resilience and thinking on your feet are the key to navigate through unexpected changes during moments of crisis. Think of it as a personal Amazing Race with higher personals stakes.

To all travelers out there: Strive to get the most updated information (Google search often turns up outdated information). Expat social media groups and twitter are great sources. Leverage airline free cancellation policies to prove your return tickets. Always know what are your passport's usual visa free countries, and how that list looks like during the pandemic.

It is inevitable that one feels low facing setack after setback. A light remedy is a personal reminder of what we already have, and be grateful. Deeply grateful to all the kind people who have graced our path with their presence, offers, and hand.

We made some beautiful discoveries with the impromptu traveling. Serbia - crossroads between empires that hosts some stunning scenery. Mauritius - we danced to sega the national music of the joyous islanders. Part of what gets me out of bed.

The rapid spread of the Delta variant is what inflicts real fear and pain on people. Covid is certainly not "just a flu." Understandably though, there are different levels of personal understanding depending on which part of the world one is from. For those with connections in India and Indonesia - the daily updates of casualties of close circles must still be a ghost in their minds. That episode will hopefully not be repeated with Omicron - health facilities and infrastructure have improved since, and more importantly people are now a lot more aware of the perils of covid.

Pandemic times were really a test of leaders' empathy and leadership quality. How does one keep a team motivated at moments of personal crises of certain members? What realistically can you do for them as a relief?

In the highly unlikely event of one searching for gynecologists spanning across continents and languages, Google reviews can be reliable. Don't go for the simple 4+ rating; look instead for the worst reviews left by people and then make your pick. Some hard lessons learned there.
2021 may have been a ride. But we are not to forget why and how the saga started - it was to celebrate a new addition to our family. And we celebrated one at the beginning of the year and one at the end. It worked out fine and, once again, gratefulness is called for.
