Well I am 3.5 months into this unemployment journey, which is the most polite descriptor I can think of for a very emotionally draining time in my life. I continue to be shocked at how hard it is to get through the initial hurdles of screening for companies, and frankly speaking, the difficulty in getting any sort of follow through from recruiters and talent teams. As time ticks on, it becomes harder and harder to keep a positive outlook on the job market, but I am doing my absolute best to manifest that the right role is out there!
- If you or someone you know is hiring, please reach out.
- If you want to know more about my experience or skills, please reach out.
- If you want references, I have tons of them.
- If you are looking for a hard working, quick learning, motivated leader, I would love to chat!
Even if I am not a fit, I have a long list of colleagues and acquaintances who have been impacted by reductions in force at various companies, and I can happily refer you to them. After all, I can only ask for help if I am willing to give it as well: people helping people!
Good afternoon LinkedIn community. As another week of job hunting chugs along, I wanted to share some of my thoughts from the experience so far. None of these are revolutionary concepts, but it is what I have experienced, and we all need to vent a bit at times, right?

There may be lots of jobs out there, but there are far more applicants. It feels like any posting that has been up longer than it takes to drink a cup of coffee (and I drink them fast!) already has over 100 applicants, and therefore feels like a spin of the proverbial roulette wheel.

The market is in a hiring company's favor, and they are using it to their advantage. Higher bars for hiring and lower salaries seem to be commonplace in many of the job descriptions I have come across compared to a year or two ago.

PSA on salary ranges: please post a real one. The amount of times I have seen a range of 6 figures for a base salary is staggering. Are you really paying one person $120k/year and another $290k/year for the same role (not talking commissions, bonuses, etc)? If so, you might need to do a deep dive on your comp philosophy.

Machine screening, bot screening, AI screening, or any other synonym make it that much harder to get through the initial barricade and talk to a human being. Without knowing the exact words, phrases, or terms that are being searched, it is hard to know if you will make it out of the slog. It also makes me wonder how often "Desired/preferred" qualifications are really more like "you better have these things if you want to get hired", but maybe that is too cynical.
If you are still reading, know that I appreciate your support from afar! Ultimately, it feels like it comes down to who you know, and the all important referral. To that end, please reach out to me if you have any leads you think I might be a fit for.
Even if I am not a fit, I know a ton of qualified and wonderful people who were impacted by layoffs like myself, and I am more than happy to play professional matchmaker where I can. If you are in my position, keep your head up.
Cheers everyone.
