Highlights
A long weekend gave me the chance to finish this remarkable book from the Institute For Fiscal Studies' Paul Johnson.
Public finances can feel dry. Follow the Money puts them in terms of the services that underpin our collective health, prosperity and happiness, with relentless clarity and perspective. 🔎
My main takeaways:
🗓️ A political system that values short termism drives underinvestment in public services. We should reward politicians who are honest with the public and tax and invest beyond the election cycle.
🛠️ Public outcomes improve with incremental reform of public services instead of tearing everything up and starting again. Conversely, many systems of taxation that fund those services are perverse, bizarre and in need of complete overhaul.
🧮 Public finances are a series of choices for both the public outcomes we value and how redistributive we want our taxation to be. We should talk plainly in those terms instead of obsessing over incidental things like waste, departmental performance or the size of macro expenditures (like health or welfare).
If you have any interest in how public expenditure works, where it's gone wrong and how to fix it, do pick up Follow the Money.
