Here's an actual breakdown of eBay's fee structure and our profit margin. We sold this 1970s Hypnotic Device for $500 this week. It is in the top 10 of the most expensive items we've ever sold.

The buyer paid $549.65 (including shipping & tax)

eBay's standard fee = $68.28 eBay's advertising fee (we pay an advertising fee on all our items) = $84.65 Cost of the shipping label (our expense) = $13.07 Actual cost of item = $70

Our profit = $277.69 (not including packaging supplies which would be about $1)

That's about a 51% profit margin. Not really that great, but for higher-priced / low-risk items we're willing to worry less about profit margin.

We spent a lot on the advertising fee, but this is how we're able to beat the competition and get our items in front of more buyers. A lot more buyers. It's CPA-based, not CPC.

I do not think we would have earned this much profit selling this product locally.

I'm open to suggestions, comments, and thoughts. I don't know how to scale this beyond $10 - $12k a month without acquiring a steady supply of high-value collectibles for less than 20% value.

Here’s a specific example of how we’re using AI (ChatGPT) to make us more efficient—and no, Tina Donati, we’re not using it to create content! 🤣

We have about 4,000 7” 45 RPM records that need to be sold, and while they’re about 80% alphabetized, we still have a lot of work to do.

Our goal is to group these records by artist and genre and sell them in lots of 30 to 50. I’m pretty confident when it comes to music, especially artists from the mid-50s to the early 80s, but we also have plenty of uncommon bands and niche genres.

Sure, I could sort them by artist name or song title, or even listen to each song, but we’re not just academically sorting these by genre. We’re aiming to group them in a way that matches a buyer’s personality, not necessarily to perfectly match genres, and we need to do it quickly.

To speed things up, we created a prompt using ChatGPT that provides each artist’s most popular decade, genre, and similar bands that a person might also want to buy.

It’s been a game changer, saving us tons of time. Just another example of how AI is an incredible supplement!
