I came across a stat the other day that said, “Less than 6% of talent in advertising are African American.” I mean, I always knew there weren’t many of us, but it hits different when seeing it in numerical form.
I didn’t even know about advertising until somebody put me on game. I always thought directors came up with the idea and made the commercials!
But here we are, lol. I’ve learned some advertising lessons/tips and tricks along the road and want to share anything I can that can help another creative on their journey. I genuinely want to open that gate for as many creatives that look like me.
So Off Hours was created, with the help of friends in the industry, to develop a space where Black, Asian, Latin, etc. creatives can have a comfortable space to come and learn about advertising, ask questions, get feedback on their portfolios, receive advice based on their goals, and be affirmed and motivated to keep going on their journey.
That being said, scheduling out now, every Monday morning for the rest of the year, I (and potentially a guest reviewer) will meet with one creative to review/work with and share any wisdom I/we have that can help them!
I may not know it all, but I am happy to share what God has blessed me with to learn thus far on my journey.
