Nicola Carpentieri

Assistant Professor, Chair: Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Connecticut

Nicola Carpentieri is a full professor of Arabic at the University of Padua, Italy.1 He obtained his Ph.D. from Harvard University and previously worked at the universities of Manchester, Barcelona, and Connecticut before returning to Padua, his hometown.1

Carpentieri's academic interests include Arabic poetry and poetics, transculturation in the Middle Ages, al-Andalus, and Islamic Sicily.1 He is currently the Principal Investigator of the ERC Consolidator Project SIQILLIYA, which examines Arabic, Hebrew, Romance, Greek, and Latin poetry produced in Sicily between the 10th and 13th centuries.1 This project aims to challenge the dominant Eurocentric narrative about the birth of Italian literature by highlighting the rich multicultural heritage of medieval Sicily.1

Carpentieri is also an accomplished author and researcher. He has written books and papers on Arabic poetry, including a study titled "Writing the Twilight: The Arabic Poetics of Ageing in Medieval Sicily and al-Andalus".2 This work explores the nuanced poetic engagement with aging, physical and mental decline, and personal and collective loss in 11th and 12th-century Arabic poetry from al-Andalus and Sicily.2

In addition to his academic work, Carpentieri is a flamenco guitarist and has organized events that combine scholarship with musical performances to raise awareness about the multicultural roots of European culture.1
