TOMS Core Faculty Fellow and Lecturer for Contemporary Civilization at Columbia University

Nicole Callahan is an accomplished educator with a strong background in English education. She serves as the TOMS Core Faculty Fellow and Lecturer for Contemporary Civilization at Columbia University, where she earned her Ph.D. in English Education from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 2017.

Her research primarily focuses on composition pedagogies and the history of the essay, showcasing her deep expertise in these areas. Callahan is dedicated to innovative teaching methods and curriculum development, particularly in connecting canonical texts to contemporary issues like mass incarceration.

In addition to her role at Columbia University, Callahan is actively involved in teaching Humanities Texts Critical Skills to the Justice-in-Education Scholars, a group of previously incarcerated individuals. Her commitment to education and social justice is further exemplified through her work with the Justice in Education Initiative alongside the Heyman Center and the Center for Justice.

An award-winning educator, Callahan received the Graduate Student Core Preceptor Award for her exceptional teaching in Contemporary Civilization. She is also an adjunct instructor in English Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, further expanding her impact in the academic realm.
