🍌Bananas empowering Women since…?
I spent the past week learning more about the banana value chain in Tanzania 🇹🇿 and one of the things I’ve found most fascinating is that it’s a value chain dominated by Women (also known as Mamas) 💃🏻
The banana value chain in Tz is a formally informal one. There’s a set way bananas move from farm to consumer - involving many “middle women” along the way, but it’s all done informally. Bananas are sourced through small and big agents - 90% are women, and aggregated along the side of the road or at designated “markets” to be collected and transported to the major consumption cities.
As the value chain starts to formalize, they are constantly looking for opportunities to self organize, streamline processes and boost their profits. Many consider themselves micro entrepreneurs and are eager to find ways to grow their businesses.
This boom in bananas has provided many of these women an income to not only look after their families, but also give them more autonomy and independence 💪

Last week I had the absolute pleasure of going on my first TechnoServe field trip! Not only did I get to spend the week out in nature, but I also met coffee producers, cooperatives, and an Honduran exporter who is truly dedicated to supporting the coffee supply chain.
It’s been incredibly touching to see how all these stakeholders work together to create a more sustainable system that enhances the lives of smallholder farmers and protects the environment, while still producing and exporting high-quality coffee. 🌱
An impressive 95% of coffee farms in Honduras already practice agroforestry, and seeing firsthand the farms that are fully regenerative gives me hope that coffee can be produced in sustainable ways that are kind to the earth. 🌎
Gracias to the Mocca program for organizing such a great tour 🙏—it's wonderful to see the positive impact programs like these have on both improving the lives of farmers and protecting the environment 💖
Our team is currently working on a project to understand how we can catalyze the investment needed to support the transition of coffee farmers to more regenerative practices - if you or anyone you know is interested in getting involved or you’re curious to hear more feel free to reach out or post in the comments!
