Amazing session earlier today on the value of #inclusiveinsights and some best practices shared by this all-star #mrx cast on how best to approach, capture and analyze #marketingresearch for more inclusive insights among #Black consumers, #Hispanic consumers, #OlderAdults, and #peoplewithdisabilities.

4 big things I took away from the session:

✅𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫, 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞. The biggest insights, ideas and innovations happen on the fringes, not in the middle of the bell curve, because that's where needs are likely to still be unmet. Plus, focusing on the fringe often leads to benefits for all.

✅𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐚𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 The #mrx industry exists to elevate human voices in order to make better decisions and develop better innovations. Our job is to be curious about people and to want to learn more about them - not to gatekeep which voices get heard.

✅𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 It can be critical for to ensure that experts representing these target audiences be part of the research design and the data analysis in order to keep unintentional bias from clouding the data interpretation and make sure cultural nuances aren't lost in translation.

✅𝐍𝐨 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐡 Every panelist made the point that there is a wealth of diversity within the groups they represented. Black and African American are two different things; Hispanic and Latina are two different things; a 50 year old has different needs than a 70 year old; and People with Disabilities is a broad umbrella.

At what point does "old age" begin? It's a subjective question, and the answer varies depending on who you ask. But if age is such a subjective construct, why is it still the primary demographic for marketing and consumer research targeting?

Perhaps it's time to re-evaluate our assumptions about age and demographics. Instead of relying on age as a primary factor, we should consider other factors such as interests, behaviors, and values. By doing so, we can create more effective marketing and research strategies that truly resonate with our target audience.

What do you think? Should we move away from age-based demographics in marketing and research? Share your thoughts in the comments.
