Rumor has it that 250 years ago there was a law that said you cannot have 2 churches right next to each other. So when church #2 wanted to be built, they put a "house" in-between.
So when laws and rules are getting in your way, get creative on how you get around it 😉.
They say every time your company doubles, it breaks.
Here were a few doubling milestones in my small businesses that hurt the most:
1->2 The break- I had to worry about paying someone else. If we had a bad month I wouldn't get paid but they would.
The fix - I paid myself a VERY modest salary and made sure to bank 3+ months of operating expenses to offset low revenue months.
2->4/5 The break - This was no longer a 1 on 1 match. I was outnumbered and couldn't micromanage my way through helping them all.
The fix - I started to document processes and creating systems for my team to follow.
5->10 The break - I had a busienss large enough that if everyone quit I couldn't just handle the work myself.
The fix - I invested in people operations and employer branding so I could keep people and hire fast.
10->20 The break - Too many meetings and I still felt I didn't know what was going on.
The fix - Embracing asynchronous methods of updating and reporting that showed me what was going on.
I've never doubled to 40 but I've seen leaders speak of the pains of the 30-50 range. After this I don't see much public complaining.
