Niels van den Hoek is the Director and Co-Founder of SweepSmart, a Dutch-Indian social enterprise focused on innovative waste management solutions tailored for developing countries, particularly India. He co-founded the company with Silvia de Vaan after recognizing the significant waste management challenges in India, especially in urban areas like Bangalore.
Background and Experience
- Education and Early Career: Niels has a background in waste management, having previously worked with Van Gansewinkel Group, a leading European waste management company. His expertise includes operational management and consultancy in waste systems.
- Role at SweepSmart: At SweepSmart, Niels is responsible for developing efficient waste processing systems that integrate local informal waste collectors into formal operations. His approach emphasizes sustainability and social responsibility, aiming to improve the livelihoods of waste pickers while enhancing recycling rates.124
Achievements
Under his leadership, SweepSmart has successfully established multiple waste sorting centers in Bangalore, significantly increasing their operational capacity and efficiency. The company employs a data-driven approach to monitor waste flows and productivity, ensuring effective management of resources.12
Vision
Niels envisions expanding SweepSmart’s impact by scaling operations to more centers across India and potentially other developing regions. His goal is to create sustainable waste management solutions that not only address environmental concerns but also provide decent jobs for local communities.34

Highlights
In my last post I wrote: "Waste separation at source has always been a core value for us. However, segregation at source requires significant effort and financing to collection fees, which is a major bottleneck in the global south. (SweepSmart will publish an article on this topic soon.)"
Today, I'm excited to share our latest article: Why We Need Large-scale Mixed Waste Processing Solutions for the Global South. It’s a 5-minute read that delves into the complexities of waste management in these regions and proposes scalable solutions to tackle these challenges.
Here’s a sneak peek into some of the key takeaways from the article:
1️⃣ The current waste system in emerging and developing countries is dominated by mismanaged waste and open dumping, with on average only 5-10% recycling.
2️⃣ Reducing and reusing materials are essential to close the tap, but even in the most optimistic scenarios, mixed waste flows will continue to grow.
3️⃣ Source segregation and recycling are crucial for transitioning to a circular system, but a significant amount of mixed waste will be there for the foreseeable future.
4️⃣ Energy and recyclables recovery from mixed waste is a solution to reduce waste to (badly managed) landfills.
5️⃣ An efficient and affordable large-scale mixed waste processing facility is also expected to attract uncollected waste.
At SweepSmart, we believe that addressing the waste management challenges in the Global South requires innovative and scalable solutions. Large-scale mixed waste processing is one of the approaches that can make a significant difference.
I invite you to read the full article and join the conversation on how we can collectively work towards a more sustainable future. Your insights and feedback are always welcome!

🌏 There we go—off to Bali, Seseh, Makassar, and Jakarta! 🛫
Daphne Gerritse, Stella, Sammie, and I are very excited to live in Indonesia for the coming two months! When Silvia de Vaan and I started SweepSmart in 2014, I never expected I’d have the opportunity to bring my family to Indonesia for business.
Last year, we embarked on a similar journey, working on projects in the Moluccas/Ambon and Delterra. I never imagined that this engagement would steer us and SweepSmart in this direction. Waste separation at source has always been a core value for us. However, segregation at source requires significant effort and financing to collection fees, which is a major bottleneck in the global south. (SweepSmart will publish an article on this topic soon.)
To address this, we—alongside Siddharth Agarwal, Renewi, Dirk Van Der Wal, Waltec Practical Waste Solutions, Rob Tholenaars, Rohith Kumar K H, Sandy Indriana, Lotte de Koning, Peter Vingerhoeds, Joop Suurmeijer, Patrick Deprez, Renewi Nederland, PUM —developed a unique waste management facility. This facility can process low-value mixed waste at scale, turning it into recyclables, compost, and SRF/RDF (alternative fuel). With this process, we can divert ~80% of waste from landfills and, importantly, avoid the generation of methane emissions. We need at least 100,000 tons per year and a tipping fee that is a fraction of what we’re used to in North West Europe.
Together with our visionary local partner, Recovered Indonesia Alex Chandra, we have chosen a forward-thinking municipality almost ready to implement this innovative solution. What’s truly remarkable is that we’re leveraging proven technologies, ingeniously integrated to maximize efficiency. This waste challenge aligns perfectly with my passion and expertise. While much of the technology is already in place, our mission is to adapt it to the local ecosystem, ensure a perfect market fit, and scale it up effectively. I am confident that we can resolve this waste issue within our generation, but time is of the essence! Stay tuned for more updates.
Turning waste into happiness! 🌟
