Nigel Pont is an experienced humanitarian and development professional with extensive experience in Afghanistan and other crisis-affected regions.13 He served as Mercy Corps' Afghanistan Country Director for two and a half years, focusing on rural agricultural development, natural resource management, and microfinance.1 Pont has a deep understanding of the region, having been born in Iran and growing up in Pakistan, and speaks Dari and Urdu.1

Throughout his career, Pont has held leadership roles in major humanitarian crises, including Kosovo, Iraq, Pakistan, and post-tsunami Aceh between 1997 and 2008.1 He has also been involved in academic and policy work, serving as a Research Fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.3

More recently, Pont has been active in discussions about algorithmic impact, speaking at the #AlgoImpactSummit.2 As of 2025, he holds the position of Chief People and Strategy Officer at Mercy Corps, continuing his work in the humanitarian and development sector.
