As Memorial Day weekend heats up in the USA, I have the chance to reflect on another completed event. Yesterday, we had the opportunity to produce the Arrival of the Memorial Cup to Saginaw, Michigan. Being part of the iconic history of Canadian sporting events is a true pleasure. In this case, the Canadian Hockey League Championship returned to the US for the first time since 1998. Canadian trophies such as the Stanley Cup, Grey Cup and Memorial Cup seem to carry immense historical weight and importance. Honouring this history in unique ways is always rewarding. This year the Memorial Cup arrived via US Military Transport and was a true bi-lateral celebration between USA and Canada.
As important and rewarding as being part of ceremonial events the true rewards come in exploring new places and meeting new people. The local organizing committee in Saginaw were a pleasure to work with. It also was fantastic to have the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra with us. We also had the opportunity to explore the unique Bavarian town of Frankenmuth. If you are ever in the central Michigan area it’s certainly worth checking out.
Good luck to all the teams! One year I will actually stay to watch some games.
Gala Season is in full swing and I recently had the opportunity to help Vancouver Opera produce their onstage Gala Event at the Vancouver Civic Theatres Queen Elizabeth Theatre again. It's the first time this Gala Dinner is back since 2019. This event is special to me as I have a long history with Vancouver Opera. I began there as Assistant Lighting Designer over 30 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed my tenure as Director of Production there from 1999-2004. This event allows me to reconnect with friends and colleagues from my past 'Opera' life as well as meet and work with the current Vancouver Opera team. This was a special year as James Wright was inducted into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame and we kicked off the Celebration for Vancouver Opera's 65th season.
