Highlights
I couldn't agree more with this article https://lnkd.in/gX8ZEM8E Something I have been experiencing in the past six years at Horangi Cyber Security - a Bitdefender company building the IT and security functions hand in hand. Unfortunately, I observe a growing disconnect between Security, IT, and Engineering in the industry. However, we all know that security must not be an afterthought but an embedded principle of all processes and systems in an organization, especially in the infrastructure your company deploys and the product it operates. I am hopeful about the trend of dual-titled IT leaders described in this article. However, it is essential not to miss one caveat. Someone will only be successful with the necessary resources. So, if you can afford a leader who can lead several functions, e.g., Security and IT, enable him to be successful by giving resources to build a strong middle-management layer.
Our panel, Finance embracing AI to prevent scams, was the last session at the 1st Anti-Scam Asia Summit. I was feeling some pressure with a desire to keep the audience engaged till the last moment. Meanwhile, many recognized professionals already discussed many interesting topics at their panels and presentations during the two days, so it was also an excellent opportunity to refer to previous discussions. I hope we achieved our mission and had useful insights to share together with Tat Wee Koh, Craig Robertson, Shishir Kumar Singh moderated by Paul Liu.
A few points from my thoughts during the panel:
- There will be an even bigger gap to be addressed in talents with AI and cybersecurity expertise.
- AI won't be one solution that addresses all problems. AI should be implemented as an enabler for humans to fight scams and fraud - human-computer symbiosis, especially as fraud is not only a technical issue but a human issue, where malicious actors are very good in marketing, creativity, and psychology. The book AI Superpowers by Kai-Fu Lee and discussions with Lee Sult inspire those thoughts.
- SMEs and startups, and there are a lot of such - fintech - in the financial industry, need support for AI implementation so that they won't be left behind. Public-private partnerships can help here, with efforts led by governments. Also, SMEs and startups can reuse open-source libraries and AI models, but it is very important to keep in mind supply chain attacks. Nothing is free; do your due diligence carefully.
The 1st Anti-Spam Asia Summit was a very fruitful and well-organized event. Thank you to the organizers, Gogolook and GASA, and all the participants. And thank you, Horangi Cyber Security - a Bitdefender company, Paul Hadjy and Mel Migriño 梅尔, for providing the opportunity. And of course, my kudos to Simon Supakijvorachai (Ding) for very welcoming and well-organized reception.
