Reverse Engineering the Bright Side: A New Self-Prompt for a Positive Approach to Life In my book, "Prompting Happiness," one of the central themes is the importance of self-prompting in various aspects of our lives to achieve true contentment and happiness. Self-prompting, much like how we prompt AI, involves guiding ourselves through intentional and reflective questions to foster a positive mindset. Inspired by the profound insights in the modern business bible that is "Startup Nation" and the recently released "The Genius of Israel" by Dan Senor and Saul Singer, I have coined a new self-prompt that I believe can significantly enhance our outlook on life: "Reverse Engineering the Bright Side." This self-prompt encourages us to view positive outcomes not as random blessings but as results of our cultural and historical contexts. In their books, Senor and Singer highlight how Israel's remarkable achievements in innovation, longevity, and societal resilience are deeply rooted in its cultural and religious heritage. The implied argument is that Israel's successes are not merely due to divine favor but are the fruits of a complex interplay of history, culture, and collective effort. By adopting this perspective, we can appreciate that positive situations in our lives, even if they are seemingly miraculous when considering the challenges we were to face at the outset, are not fleeting or arbitrary. Instead, they are the culmination of our past experiences, hard work, and the supportive frameworks of our communities. This understanding helps build a sense of security and gratitude, as we recognize that our fortunes are not subject to random change but are deeply connected to our actions and values. Conversely, viewing positive outcomes as mere divine gifts can lead to a sense of randomness and unpredictability in our lives. While faith and spirituality are important, attributing all success to divine will alone, might leave us feeling vulnerable to sudden changes in fortune. By "reverse engineering the bright side", as Singer and Senor have done so inspiringly for Israel over the past three decades, we can foster a more grounded and proactive approach to our happiness, understanding that we play a significant role in shaping our positive experiences. Senor and Singer’s works offer a compelling narrative that aligns perfectly with this self-prompt. They demonstrate that Israel's low rates of deaths of despair, high life expectancy, and vibrant innovation ecosystem are products of a resilient culture and historical continuity. This realization empowers individuals to see their successes as part of a larger, meaningful tapestry rather than isolated miracles. During this difficult time for Israel, reverse engineering its bright side has helped me remain optimistic and positive in the face of great adversity and negativity, out of a sense of security in the power of our community and the great potential that our home harbors.
