Highlights
In May, I reflect on my childhood as we moved in the summers to the next location where the US Air Force assigned my father. May is a time for excitement for "what's next" and reflection on the friends I would leave behind.
I used to jokingly call myself a military brat, but I have since learned that is a badge of honor. Back in the 1920s, BRATs were known as "British Regiment Attached Travelers," describing families accompanying service members. Towards the late 18th century, "barrack rat" referred to the children of British military living in army barracks, merging into the term we use today. These kids move every couple of years, attending between 4-12 schools (8 for me!). They adapt to new environments, schools, and friendships with impressive agility. Their upbringing instills traits like adaptability, resilience, and a strong sense of patriotism.
My reflection on my childhood reinforces my patriotism, especially with the Memorial Day holiday this coming Monday. I want to extend my gratitude to all who have served or are serving in the military. Your sacrifices, courage, and dedication ensure our safety and freedom. Whether deployed abroad or stationed at home, you embody the spirit of service and selflessness. This weekend and on Monday join me to recognize and honor their contributions, both past and present to our nation's security and well-being.
When you're in the news...
Excited to be at GHD!
