My mom, Shelly Weiss , passed away suddenly but peacefully on Thursday morning. She lived an overflowing century of life in 77 years 💖

She would always say: “I’m on a live-it, not a die-it.”  Life was about the journey – she rarely talked about the end. She grew up with very little, sharing a 1-bedroom apartment with her family. But she always had an abundance mindset for her people, communities, and causes.

Despite being a single mom running her own non-profit – which as a new dad I find mindblowing – I grew up feeling that same sense of abundance for the opportunities ahead of me. She raised me on three principles: “try everything twice”, “never go to bed angry”,  and “there’s an unlimited budget for books.” Her belief in me was unwavering and unbounded.

Whether she was your friend for 30 years or you met her only a few times, the words people used to describe her are the same: “a force of nature”, “a tireless advocate”, “endlessly and exuberantly supportive”, and someone who could “light up any room”. That’s why late into her 70s, she still had more friends in their 20s and 30s than anyone else I know.

In 2021, she was diagnosed with late-stage kidney disease. She defied medical forecasts, staving off her kidney disease for three joy-filled years. In December, despite severely weakened conditioning, “Bubs” still spent nearly a full-day grating potatoes so we could cook homemade latkes together. Propped up with one hand on her cane and the other on a frying pan, she put on a Jewish cooking class for Willow. Willow devoured those latkes with Daal on top in our first-ever Hinjew Chanukah celebration. We called mom Shell-dog, and Willow is the ultimate Shell-pup. She’s food obsessed. She’ll crawl into the middle of the circle at the start of every class, bobbing and waving at all the other kids to join us. All of this was just six weeks ago. In hindsight it’s clear how my mom put every bit of physical reserve she had left to get to celebrate with her Shell-pup one last time.

I’ll miss you forever, mom, but your memory and presence will burn brightly for our family, across Brooklyn, for the thousands of people you touched, and for Willow – always ❤️
