Noam Chomsky

Professor Emeritus at Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Avram Noam Chomsky, born on December 7, 1928, is an eminent American theoretical linguist, cognitive scientist, philosopher, historian, social critic, and political activist.1267 He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to parents who were Hebrew scholars.13 Sometimes referred to as "the father of modern linguistics," Chomsky is also known for his work in analytic philosophy and is one of the founders of cognitive science.27

Chomsky's work includes:

  • Education He received a bachelor’s degree in linguistics in 1949, a master’s degree in 1951, and a doctorate in 1955 from the University of Pennsylvania.13 From 1951 to 1955, he was a Junior Fellow of the Harvard University Society of Fellows, where he completed his doctoral dissertation, "Transformational Analysis".3
  • Career Chomsky became a member of the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1955.1 In 2017, he joined the University of Arizona as a laureate professor in the Department of Linguistics.4 Even after accepting the position at the University of Arizona, he retained his office and position as Professor of Linguistics emeritus at MIT.4
  • Linguistic Theory Chomsky radically changed the field of linguistics by positing language as a uniquely human, biologically-based cognitive capacity.1 In 1957, he published "Syntactic Structures," which outlined his linguistic theory.1 Chomsky rejected behaviorist ideas, such as those of B. F. Skinner, and argued that humans are born with the innate ability to understand the generative grammars that constitute human language.1 His linguistic theory was further established in his 1965 work, “Aspects of the Theory of Syntax” and in 1975, with “The Logical Structure of Linguistic Theory”.1
  • Political Activism Since the 1960s, Chomsky has been an influential voice on the American left, known for his criticism of U.S. foreign policy, contemporary capitalism, and corporate influence on political institutions and the media.67 Ideologically, he aligns with anarcho-syndicalism and libertarian socialism.26
