Highlights
(Un)popular opinion: 70% of creating high-quality, engaging content is RESEARCH. The other 30% is writing and editing.
This is why those who don’t research beyond top SERPs end up creating content that looks and sounds like everyone else’s.
A solid researching process separates the wheat from the chaff, The quality from the average, The memorable from the everyday.
Now for the million dollar question...
How do you research beyond what's on top SERPs? 🤔
Here are 8 techniques:
-
Ask the client for a brain dump on the topic / industry. Interview transcriptions can then be used across content pieces as needed.
-
Turn to social and forums. Reddit, FB, IG, LI, YT, Quora, Amazon, G2, etc. are gold mines for voice of customer research.
Find where your audience is hanging out / leaves reviews. Poke around there.
-
Listen to podcasts. And if you're short on time, find their transcriptions for indirect quotes.
-
Read or listen to books. Turn to Google Books to find exact matches of what you're looking for in less time.
-
Interview SMEs For external SMEs, publish your requests on sites like Terkel, Help A B2B Writer, Qwoted, or HARO. You can also tweet #journorequest.
Bonus points if you develop images from expert quotes. Post-publishing, that's one more (almost guaranteed) distribution partner.
-
Subscribe to newsletters Ask around in Slack channels, FB groups, LI, etc. for industry go-tos.
-
Dig through industry white papers, research studies, etc.
-
Attend industry-specific conferences. Again, indirect quotes from keynote speakers can be leveraged in creating and promoting your own content.
💡
Sound like a lot?
That's cuz it is.
Creating quality content takes time.
And that's why it often doesn't come cheap. 😉
