At IMB Partners, one of our core values is taking an entrepreneurial approach. This resonates with me because entrepreneurship has been an important part of my family’s story.

Like many immigrants, my parents came to America in search of a better life. Leaving behind war, autocratic regimes and poverty, their first stop was Manhattan’s Chinatown, where they met while working at the same restaurant. They worked very hard in those days to save up a little money and to learn the restaurant business. A few years later, the rest of my mom’s family was eligible for refugee resettlement in Grand Rapids, Michigan, thanks to the kindness of American sponsors in the local community. My parents relocated to Grand Rapids to reunite with my mom’s family. With no formal education but plenty of restaurant experience, my parents turned to entrepreneurship to pursue their American dream.

It would not have been possible for my parents to open their first restaurant in 1987 if it wasn’t for a business loan from a community bank and a $25,000 gift from my grandfather, which represented almost all of his life savings. Today, they own three restaurants with more than 60 employees and have built a successful real estate investment portfolio. However, my parents have never forgotten that it was this community support that allowed them to settle and grow their business in Grand Rapids, and they have paid it forward by giving back to the community in various ways over the years.

I have admired my parents’ drive and leadership my whole life. I grew up seeing my parents working 16+ hour days, determined to make the most of what they had been given and to create financial stability for our family and economic opportunity for other immigrant families in our community. Their long hours and perseverance taught me the importance of leading by example, and not being above rolling up my sleeves to get the work done. Today, I strive to carry these lessons of servant leadership with me into my daily life and into my work with IMB Partners, where I help founders create their own version of the American dream.
