Let's talk about China Edtech regulations! It's been six months since the regulation was introduced and we can see results:

  1. Not the whole EdTech was affected, only extracurricular studies in K-12 in what comes to school subjects, so EdTech in China is not dead. And generally speaking, it is not some tragedy or anything unpredictable; the government's approach to innovation is "to give the green light to the industry, to observe, to regulate". There will definitely be no easing, but new ways of interaction between private companies and schools will appear.

  2. There was a lot of talk in Western media about the harsh policies in extracurricular tutoring, whereas the reform of specialized secondary education was hardly even mentioned there. This needs a bit of history. In 2015, the government introduced an "Internet +" 互联网+ strategy, which was meant to bring innovation into the traditional spheres. In current descriptions of the reform of specialised secondary education we can see such term as "Internet+ education", and this means that a certain education niche is being created to train those who will serve the new digital economy (high-tech equipment, smart technologies, biomedicine, outer space). I think this trend will be seen in other countries as well, because innovative industries require new personnel.

  3. What is going on with the leaders in pre-school education, those who are affected by the reform? A) They are switching to the specialised secondary education market. In recent years, there has been a trend to expand business towards pre-school education. Now it's the opposite, the focus is on older audiences. I assume that this sector will grow over the next 5-10 years. B) Many are moving into the B2B sector - to smart classroom technology, cloud services (for example, robots that do homework checks and track student progress automatically), some are stepping into hardware and start to manufacture "smart" pens/light bulbs, and so on.

  4. How might these reforms affect the international education market? We will be fighting for our place under the sun against Chinese corporations, which will probably be conquering markets through mergers and acquisitions in their turn. #china #chinaedtech #chinainnovation
