Highlights
Persistence. The dictionary defines it as "firm or obstinate continuance in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition". I like that definition. I particularly like that the word "obstinate" is in there because though people often think of that as a negative quality, I think it depends. If one obstinately persists in believing that climate change isn't real despite all the science, that's bad. If one obstinately persists in believing that the efforts of everyday citizens can save democracy, that's good.
The past few weeks have been full of consequential, and largely, but not entirely, bad news. With all the disheartening decisions about things that matter in our everyday lives, I had to take a news break. For a little while I just disconnected and tended my own tiny garden, both literally and figuratively. Caring for our mental health is essential if we're to be of use to anyone else.
And then, it's time to get back to work. Time to step up and do what we can to make a difference. I probably don't know you so I can't tell you specifically what you should do. What I do know is that there is something that you care about, something that matters deeply to you that you are concerned about. Feed that thing, nurture that cause. Do a tiny thing today to make a change, and again tomorrow.
If we persist we will make a difference. For inspiration and practical ideas, grab a copy of my Basics of Micro Activism: 4 Essential Questions and 5 Tips. https://lnkd.in/eaYxNmn6.
Exciting News!!!
My book, Micro Activism: How You Can Make a Difference in the World (Without a Bullhorn) has won a Gold Nautilus Award in the Social Change & Social Justice category. Honestly, I was speechless when I got the news. That happens rarely.
I hope that this brings more people into the world of Micro Activism. Yes, there is a great deal to do but we get there one step at a time, together. We live in a world that tells us that only big things matter but small actions, micro actions are sustainable and they make a difference. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
I'm enormously grateful to my publisher Storey Publishing for their support throughout this project and to the gifted illustrator Octavia Ink who so perfectly captured my vision for the art in the book.
