Highlights
It's been 4 years since I left my role at Alaska Airlines but it seems like yesterday that I was working alongside this brilliant team. Our Bay Area External Relations (#BAER) got together last week and it was like no time had passed...we celebrated new beginnings, a baby on the way, a retirement, and our mutual fondness for one another.
#Lesson reinforced?: #relationshipcurrency is everything. Invest in others who invest in you and fill your cup. Thankful for my time with these people Annabel R. Today is my abuelita Gloria's 90th birthday. This woman is an absolute firecracker who still drives, has regular girl nights with her "home girls" (her exact words ;), and remains the toughest woman I know. The youngest daughter of a #firstgen single #Mexican mother from Aguas Calientes who has 4 kids, 6 grandkids, and 8 great-grandkids (including my two daughters), she is a complete #badass. Gloria has been my biggest #ambassador and #supporter, flying to be by my side during all my important life moments, nurturing me and my daughters every step of the way. She has taught me many lessons over the years but the biggest 3 I'd like to share are:
1. BE TRUE TO YOURSELF: During times of assimilation, my Grandma was regularly told, including by her high school guidance counselor, that because of her blonde hair and blue eyes, she could "pass" as White and have a better chance at career success. Her response? To laugh in the counselor's face and declare that she would NEVER stop speaking her native Spanish tongue. She went on to have a successful nursing career. One night at a dinner party, a man made racially discriminating comments about Mexicans in front of her. Her response? She told him that she was a proud Mexican and if he had a problem with that, she would meet him out in the parking lot...he shut up after that.
-
SHINE YOUR LIGHT BRIGHT: My Grandma is a beacon of light that others flock to no matter where she goes. She makes lifelong friends during every vacation, gathering people along the way that she keeps in touch with for decades to come. People approach her in grocery stores, restaurants, and in the airport, and end up telling her their life stories. Be that light for others, especially in times of darkness.
-
OWN YOUR STORY: My Grandma is a big believer in knowing and having strength in who you are to know where you are going. You are the master of your own story. Paint your own picture, the world is at your disposal. Make the most of the time that you have on this earth to craft a story that you enjoy, want to share with others, and are proud of. Be true to yourself and your roots. Pay homage to your family and those that paved the way before you. And for the women in our family, own your strength and never be afraid to show the world who you are.
To all the abuelitas and abuelitos out there, we see you and thank you! Cheers to a wonderful woman who has my heart <3 #GrandmasGirl
