Highlights
Though iO Sphere is only a few months old, we're already getting signals that we're actually doing something different. Changing the way things are done, not just talking about it.
We set out to bring more diversity into data and analytics. Diversity of all types – gender, race, sexuality, socio-economic, disabilities, neurodiversity, the list goes on. Our approach is working. At iO Sphere, we are lowering the barrier to high-quality training and careers in analytics by charging trainees nothing up front. Instead, our network of partner employers covers the cost of their training through a £5k placement fee when they hire our trainees out of the programme.
We’ve had almost 1000 applications for our first cohort. Some numbers I’m particularly proud of:
- Socio-economic: 28% received free school meals, 61% went to non-fee paying schools, and 41% are the first generation to go to university
- Racial: 82% BAME
- Age: 49% are 25+ years old
We’ve still got more to do. Our applicant base should mirror society. We’re constantly assessing our marketing and application process for bias. We have two we’re tackling:
- Gender: 33% of our applicants are female – we know some of our marketing is too masculine. We’re fixing it
- Race: 18% of our applicants are white vs 82% in England (37% in London)
Keen to hear new ideas for how to tackle this! How are others removing bias from their application processes?
