Otto Scharmer

Senior Lecturer, MIT, and Founding Chair, Presencing Institute

Otto Scharmer is a prominent figure in the fields of management and systems transformation, serving as a Senior Lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management and the Founding Chair of the Presencing Institute. His work focuses on innovative approaches to leadership and organizational change, particularly through the lens of his groundbreaking concept known as "presencing," which emphasizes learning from the emerging future.123

Background and Education

Scharmer was born and raised near Hamburg, Germany, where early experiences on his family's farm influenced his views on social fields and regenerative practices. He holds a diploma and a PhD in economics from Witten/Herdecke University in Germany.12

Key Contributions

Theory U

Scharmer is best known for developing Theory U, a framework for profound systems change that he elaborates in his bestselling books, including Theory U and Presence (co-authored with Peter Senge). This framework outlines processes for leaders to facilitate transformation by shifting their awareness from ego-centric to eco-centric perspectives.123

Presencing Institute

In 2006, he co-founded the Presencing Institute, which serves as an action research platform aimed at fostering awareness-based systems change. The institute has developed methodologies that have been applied globally to address pressing challenges like climate change, inequality, and healthcare.46 Scharmer also launched the MITx u.lab, an online platform that has engaged over 240,000 participants worldwide in transformational learning experiences.12

Awards and Recognition

Scharmer's contributions have been recognized through various awards, including the Jamieson Prize for Teaching Excellence at MIT and the Elevating Humanity Award from the Organizational Development Network. His work has significantly influenced both academic thought and practical applications in leadership and organizational development.56

Current Focus

Currently, Scharmer continues to lead initiatives that support cross-sector innovation and societal transformation. He emphasizes the importance of nurturing social fields to enable visible transformations within organizations and communities.12 His ongoing projects include collaborations with UN agencies to promote sustainable development goals across multiple countries.36

Through his teachings and writings, Otto Scharmer advocates for a shift in how leaders approach change, urging them to cultivate environments that foster collective learning and innovation.

Pleased and honored to share that my Sounds True One Live podcast episode with Tami Simon is live. How do we move from just reacting against the issues of the past, toward sensing and actualizing the future that is wanting to emerge? You can check it out here: https://lnkd.in/eemkdVSf

The number one problem facing humanity today is not climate change, inequality, AI or war. Rather, it is our environment and sense of collective depression: that we lack the agency to change any of it.

In the face of collapsing systems, we see lots of progress and disturbing setbacks at the same time. I have spent the past 25+ years as an action researcher to help communities and multi-stakeholder systems through situations like this: challenges of disruption that require us to learn from the emerging future.

Here is the number one thing that I learned: that, to navigate these deeper territories of not-knowing, risk, fear, and ambiguity, we need to access a deeper form of knowledge: the knowing of the field (a deepened sense of collective self-knowing). That type of knowledge is different from the conventional concepts of first-person (subjective), second-person (inter-subjective), and third-person knowing (objective) knowledge. In an article published yesterday, my colleague Eva Pomeroy and I refer to this deeper transformative layer of knowing as Fourth Person: The Knowing of the Field.

Even though Fourth Person knowing is not taught at our universities and schools, it is widely distributed in societal experience today: anyone who ever participated in a deeply generative process, or in a profound process of organizational, community, or systems change knows that deeply felt knowing. For example, I am just coming from two workshops with the 60 core leaders and change makers of a European business ecosystem focusing on business as a force for good -- and we experienced exactly this level of deepened collective self-knowing. Anyone who ever participated in a social movement has experienced this kind of knowing: you are part of something that is not just you, but that LOOKS at you and DEPENDS on YOU to manifest.

We wrote this article because we believe that the success of our efforts to rise to the occasion in the face of our planetary polycrisis depends on reshaping our societal learning and leadership processes and structures in ways that are less rigidly fixated on third-person knowledge (which in the age of AI feels like an outdated and losing proposition) and more grounded in a balance between all knowledge types, including fourth person knowing: the emerging knowing of the field.

Enjoy the read! (for fast readers: after the intro parts, fast forward to the header: Fourth Person Knowing: The Missing Perspective). Let us know whether this concept resonates with your own related experiences. Appreciated!
