How can we enhance the safety of Vision Language Models (VLMs) against adversarial attacks? Maisha's latest research, "AI Safety in Practice: Enhancing Adversarial Robustness in Multimodal Image Captioning," accepted for presentation at the 3rd Workshop on Ethical Artificial Intelligence: Methods and Applications (in conjunction with ACM SIGKDD'24), provides an answer.

We show that adversarially re-training only the language model component significantly improves the security of the entire architecture. This focused approach balances robustness and computational efficiency, advancing the ethical deployment of AI systems.
